“Homemade Lenses” 2010-Present
The following series of photographs were taken with DIY lenses made for a digital camera. I started experimenting with single element lenses and other optics as a way to add some chance or unexpectedness to taking photos. The first lens (EP1-Lens 001) was a simple convex lens taken out of an old overhead projector duct taped to a paper towel roll attached to a mirrorless interchangeable lens digital camera. These first few images were taken at Sutro Baths in San Francisco in 2010. Since then I have made hundreds of lenses for many different cameras.
This first series of photos was taken in Palo Alto, California. This is a very nostalgic series for me. I had just moved to California to go to art school after dropping out of graduate school for geology in New York. I just starting to experiment with photography. I would roam alone around Palo Alto at night with a camera bag full of loose lenses, tape and paper towel rolls and a book bag full of beer. This series unlike the others that follow is about drinking. I remember taking everyone of these photos, early on n this process ever photo was a revelation. The titles are taken from one the make notebooks I would also carry around.
